With over 19 years of experience as a foot and ankle specialist, Associate Professor Simon Platt understands that you may be feeling a bit worried about what comes next in your medical journey. He will take the time to talk to you about your concerns and explain fully what you can expect from your diagnosis and potential treatment options. Dr Platt will work with you to map out a treatment plan that aims to give you the best possible outcome.
Dr Platt graduated from medical school at the University of Bristol, UK in 1993. He then taught anatomy at the University of Liverpool for a year before commencing his training in all aspects of surgery. In 1999, Dr Platt embarked upon his training as an Orthopaedic Surgeon, gaining fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (FRCS) in 2004. Subsequently, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2019. He has been practicing medicine since 1993 and in independent specialist practice as a consultant foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon since 2005.
As a full-time specialist in Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr Platt has extensive experience, encompassing all conditions of the foot and ankle. His practice covers both trauma and elective surgery in the public and private sectors in the Gold Coast.
As an early adopter of minimally invasive and arthroscopic techniques for the foot and ankle, Dr Platt’s patients benefit from the range of surgical options available and his wealth of experience. He will utilise the optimum techniques for his patients.
He will not suggest surgery if you don’t need it. He will discuss your treatment options in a straightforward and transparent manner.
Dr Platt is a fellow of several prestigious medical societies and serves on the editorial board of a leading foot and ankle orthopedic journal. He is the scientific secretary of the Australian Foot and Ankle Society. His dedication to excellence and compassionate patient care have earned him the trust and admiration of patients and colleagues alike.
In addition to his clinical and research endeavors, Dr Platt is deeply committed to medical education, mentoring the next generation of orthopedic surgeons. He is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences, where he shares his expertise and insights with colleagues from around the world. He is a regular faculty member for courses in Australasia, Europe and Asia.
He has published a popular textbook ‘ 'Pocket Tutor in Orthopaedic Surgery'.’ for medical students and junior doctors.
Locally, he also regularly teaches at meetings for the wider interdisciplinary team including nurses and physiotherapists. He provides General Practitioner updates in his specialty.
Dr Platt is qualified to provide complex independent medico-legal reports for motor vehicle injuries in Queensland, ACT, Tasmania, Western Australia and Northern Territory; for Public Liability matters, in Queensland, ACT, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory; for workers compensation matters in Queensland and Northern Territory; and for Comcare, Superannuation, and DVA matters nationally.
Dr Platt is highly engaged in research and continues to lead multiple research studies, investigating surgical outcomes, and the interaction between pain and foot disease.
He has a particular research interest in complex foot and ankle deformity, central mediation of pain, and the understanding of risk, and how non-mechanical factors influence outcome following orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Platt presents work at both national and international meetings, where he has had 100 abstracts accepted for oral and poster presentations and over 50 peer reviewed publications. A key opinion leader in his field, he has been an invited speaker at many scientific meetings.
