Academic Profile

Associate Professor Platt has significant experience in the field of orthopaedics and regularly teaches and performs advanced foot reconstruction. Dr Platt is actively involved with teaching medical students and registrars, the latter for which he has won awards. He was Trainer of the Year in 2015. He has taught advanced foot surgery techniques both locally and internationally.

He is the Scientific secretary for the Australian Foot and Ankle Society.

He is a member for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Queensland State Committee.

He has a particular interest in complex foot and ankle deformity, central mediation of pain and the understanding of risk, and how non-mechanical factors influence outcome following orthopaedic surgery.

He is heavily involved in research and leads a number of research studies investigating surgical outcomes and the interaction between pain and foot disease.

Associate Professor Platt is a member of the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service human research ethics committee.

He has been in practice as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon since December 2005, qualifying in medicine in 1993.

Associate professor Simon Platt presents work at both national and international meetings, where he has had 100 abstracts accepted for oral and poster presentations. A key opinion leader in his field, he has been an invited speaker at many scientific meetings and presents work in the field of foot and ankle surgery along with wider aspects of orthopaedic surgery.

He has active interest in medical education with presentations in this aspect both nationally and internationally.

and is an Associate Professor at Griffith University and an Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor at Bond University. He achieved a distinction in the Postgraduate Certificate in medical education course offered by Edge Hill University. He is faculty for both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Australia in courses developing teaching, training and supervision skills.
